M1- Discuss the uses and benefits of having a media profile.
People can use websites to show off their work to employers and this is a positive as that means your employer can look at work wherever as long as they are connected to the internet and it means that you don't have to see them in person if that is restricting or causing issues. However, a negative to show casing your work via a website is that it may take a while to create the site and actually put your work on there to show to employers. Also, you could use another persons work and claim it is your own by showing off the work and saying that you created it.
People may post their work or even CVs on blogs so multiple people can see what they are about. This is a good thing as you are basically already putting your CV out there along with some of your work which may encourage employers to approach you instead of you having to find them if they like what they see. This could save a lot of time. A negative to using blogs to post your work and CV is that it is exposed to the public so you may have people who unfairly criticize your work and give it a bad review which may put employers off.
Digital CVs are used to send to your employer if you cannot see them in person. This is good as you can send your employer your CV and they can then access it at any time which saves time for you and your employer. A negative side to digital CVs is that you not seeing them in person may put you at a disadvantage compared to someone who has because your employer could end up liking your competition in person more which gives them a head start. A physical CV would be used when seeing your employer in person so they look at it and ask you questions about what you have written. The advantage to using a physical CV is that you can feedback and information face to face which could be much more helpful than on a device as may take time to respond to your CV if you have sent it online. The downside to using a physical CV is that you need to first of all print off what you have written which is time consuming and sometimes costly. Also, you cannot send your CV to your employer whenever you can only show them it when you see them.
A physical portfolio is used to show your employer all the work you have done so far in your life that will potentially give you the edge over a competitor. A positive to using a portfolio is that you keep all your work together so you down have to show your employer multiple documents which can be awkward to work with sometimes. A negative to using a physical portfolio is similar to using a physical CV as you need to showcase it to an employer in person so you cannot send them it online so they can access it from home.
A show reel is similar to a portfolio but it is digital so you make a 2-3 minute long video containing short clips and still images showcasing your work relevant to the job you are applying for. The advantage to using a show reel is that your employer can access it at anytime and can easily see what you have done in your career so far. In addition, it gives you chance to explain how you made the work and why you have included certain features. A downside to using a show reel is that if you have done a lot of work in the past, it may be tricky to fit it all into a short video and it may become too long. Also, they maybe time consuming to make as you need to find the best way to showcase your work without using irrelevant or boring work in your video.
